Lockdowns. Shutdowns. Letdowns.

2020 was a real downer. Then 2021 arrived, and things were looking up. The world was open to new possibilities. Its first major global sporting event, was the 2021 Australian Open. And Mastercard was a major sponsor.

While attendance was limited, we refused to let it limit what we achieved. 

It was time to innovate, to reinvent the grand slam experience… so that fans could connect with the tennis like never before. It was time to Open the Open.

Introducing ‘Virtual Fans’.

Over 14 days, Mastercard let thousands more fans in, who otherwise couldn’t attend. Some beamed in on a Virtual Fan’s face, using our custom Instagram filter, and joined the courtside fun in the thick of the action. (The lucky ones even got their face on a global TV broadcast.)

While Mastercard cardholders got to see through the eyes of a Virtual Fan, with interactive Zooms and live-streams — for special all-star meet-and-greets, and a training session with our superstar ambassador, Naomi Osaka.

Thanks to Virtual Fans, you could truly Open the Open — and be at the tennis, even when it was closed. We even had open interviews, for inside looks at the lives of tennis legends.
